Director's Message
It has been over 115 years since mankind took the first flight, transforming the way human being travel from one place to another. No other invention has influenced human civilisation the way aviation has. India was one of the first countries in Asia to have an established aviation infrastructure, with the first ever commercial take-off happening from Karachi to Juhu Airport by J.R.D Tata on 15 October 1932. Since then, India has taken off as one of the leading aviator countries around the world.
As India transitioned from the propeller age to the Jet Age, the government envisioned the need of a premier institute for training pilots with the latest technologies of the time. Keeping this requirement in mind, the Government of India set up its first dedicated national aviation training institute in 1985 under the name of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA), established at Fursatganj in district Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. The academy was established with the aim of creating a centre for excellence for training commercial pilots, providing trainees with the best of training facilities available.
IGRUA initially started with a fleet of single-engine Daher Socata TB 20 and dual-engine Beechcraft King Air C90A along with associated six-axis motion simulators. The administration of the Akademi had ensured that cutting edge technology of the time was available, including the availability of its own navigation and landing aids, which remain the Academy's hallmark even in today's time.
With the liberalisation of civil aviation taking place since 2005 in India, there was a surge in demand for air transport. To address this demand and train the next generation pilots, IGRUA acquired the 14 Diamond DA-40 aircraft and two twin-engine DA-42 aircraft along with their FNPT simulators.
The Akademi has come a long way from clearing 20 CPL holders in its initial years, to now annually qualifying 80 cadets, soon expected to cross 100 CPL holders. As a pioneering centre for excellence in aviation, IGRUA is considered as one of the leading academic training institutes in India, along the lines of IITs and IIMs. Consequently, IGRUA has become the choice of pilot training even for the defence forces, namely the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, sending 12 and eight pilots respectively, to train with IGRUA on a yearly basis.
Low fuel prices, rising incomes and the growing commercial and industrial requirement of quick access has resulted in India's carriers placing large orders as they expand their network across India and around the world. As IGRUA is set to complete 33 years, the Academy's administration is cognisant of this growing demand for pilots by Indian carriers. To address this growing demand and the rapid technological transformation of the Indian Aviation sector, IGRUA is ready to train young aviators with state-of-the-art aircraft, to ensure safe and comfortable flights across the country for all citizens.
With great pleasure, I welcome the establishment of Aircraft Maintenance Training Center at IGRUA
