Vermiculture Process at IGRUA

Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi disposes of its domestic bio-degradable waste through a Vermiculture Plant located in the residential campus.

Vermiculture is the process of using earthworms to decompose bio-degradable waste, turning the waste in to a nutrient-rich manure. The method is simple, effective, convenient, noiseless and environmental friendly. In IGRUA bio-degradable and non-degradable wastes from houses and hostel mess are collected separately. The bio-degradable waste is transferred to the vermiculture plant where it is allowed to further decompose. During the process earthworms are used who consume the decaying material and then flush it out of their system in what is referred to as castings or worm manure.

The worm castings are excellent soil conditioner and all-natural fertilizer. Using vermiculture produce compost to fertilize plant is a way to naturally feed plants all the nutrients they require without having to turn to harmful chemicals that are often found in commercially available fertilizers.
